The University of Santo Tomas (UST) Golden Tigresses proved their mettle even without star player Eya Laure, securing a sweep against the National University (NU) Lady Bulldogs in the UAAP Season 86 women’s volleyball tournament. Despite facing a formidable NU lineup led by veterans Bea Belen, Sheena Toring, and Alyssa Jae Solomon, UST emerged victorious with scores of 25-19, 25-23, and 25-22.

Head coach Emilio “Kung Fu” Reyes Jr. expressed his surprise at the outcome, acknowledging the strong performance of his players on the court. While he had seen their capabilities during practice, he admitted to being shocked by the results of the game against NU.

Reyes attributed UST’s successful opener to the hard work and dedication of the team during the off-season training. He emphasized the importance of consistent practice, noting that it ultimately leads to positive results.

Sophomore playmaker Cassie Carballo played a significant role in UST’s victory, contributing 20 excellent sets and scoring six points during the game. Carballo expressed her happiness with the team’s performance, highlighting their ability to handle pressure and enjoy the game while executing their training effectively.

Despite NU’s previous Finals appearance in UAAP Season 85 and their silver finish, the team faced challenges with the departure of key players Ces Robles, Joyme Cagande, and Jennifer Nierva. However, UST’s strong showing in their season opener signaled their readiness to compete at a high level in the tournament.
