Ahead of the highly anticipated clash between Gilas Pilipinas and Taiwan in the FIBA Asia Cup 2025 Qualifiers, coach Tim Cone has issued a stern warning against complacency. Despite the Philippines’ convincing victory over Hong Kong in their previous outing, Cone emphasized the need for his team to maintain focus and intensity against a formidable Taiwanese squad.

Both teams enter the match with differing performances in their respective opening games of the regional qualifiers. While Gilas Pilipinas showcased a dominant second-half performance to defeat Hong Kong 94-64, Taiwan fought valiantly but ultimately fell to the New Zealand Tall Blacks with a score of 89-69 in Taipei.

Despite being considered the favorites, Cone stressed the importance of respecting the Taiwanese team’s speed and pace, highlighting the need to counter their running-and-gunning style of play. Veteran Taiwanese player Cheng Liu, known for his experience and leadership, will be leading the charge against the Philippines.

Gilas Pilipinas, led by towering big men Kai Sotto, Kevin Quiambao, and Carl Tamayo, alongside veteran campaigner Japeth Aguilar, will aim to utilize their height advantage while relying on the offensive prowess of naturalized players Justin Brownlee and Scottie Thompson.

Coach Cone cautioned against underestimating Taiwan, acknowledging their strong lineup and cohesive team chemistry. Despite perceptions of Gilas being the heavy favorite, Cone emphasized the strength of the Taiwanese squad, noting their impressive performance in previous competitions such as the Jones Cup and the Asian Games.

Ultimately, as Gilas Pilipinas prepares to face Taiwan, Cone emphasized the need for his team to approach the game with utmost respect and determination, recognizing the challenge posed by their opponents. With both teams eager to secure a victory in the FIBA Asia Cup 2025 Qualifiers, fans can expect an intense and closely contested matchup at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.
