Coach Cone elaborates significance of veteran players in the Gilas roster
Gilas Pilipinas’ new coach, Tim Cone, underscores the importance of having veteran players in the roster for immediate success in FIBA tournaments. This was the rationale behind including seasoned national team member June Mar Fajardo, along with his San Miguel teammate CJ Perez, as well as Barangay Ginebra’s Scottie Thompson and Jamie Malonzo.
Apart from naturalized player Justin Brownlee, Fajardo and Chris Newsome are the oldest members of the latest Gilas lineup at 33 years old. Fajardo, in particular, boasts extensive international experience, having been part of the team since its silver medal finish in the FIBA Asia Cup in Manila in 2013. He has since represented the Philippines in three FIBA World Cups.
Cone explains that the combination of veteran and young players is crucial for the team’s success. While young players offer potential for growth, veterans provide leadership and guidance, especially in high-stakes competitions. The presence of experienced players like Fajardo and Co. serves as a mentorship for the younger group, which includes promising talents like Kai Sotto, AJ Edu, Carl Tamayo, and Kevin Quiambao.
Versatility is also a key factor considered by Cone in forming the roster, as Gilas will encounter teams with diverse strengths in FIBA tournaments. Defense remains a focal point for Cone, reflecting his coaching philosophy. His track record in the PBA, highlighted by numerous championships, underscores his emphasis on defensive prowess.
Gilas is set to begin its training camp in preparation for the FIBA Asia Qualifiers 2025. The team will face Hong Kong on February 22 and Taiwan on February 25 in the opening window of the qualifiers.
