A thrilling match in women’s volleyball for UE against Ateneo
Casiey Dongallo made a remarkable debut in the UAAP, leading the UE Lady Warriors to a historic victory over the Ateneo Blue Eagles in the opening game of the UAAP Season 86 women’s volleyball tournament. Dongallo’s stellar performance, which included 27 points, propelled UE to their first win over Ateneo since UAAP Season 73 in 2010, breaking a 14-year drought.
Despite Ateneo taking the first set, UE quickly bounced back in the second set, capitalizing on an error-prone Ateneo side to pull away and secure the set. In the third set, UE staged a comeback from a late deficit to seize the lead with a 4-1 run, ultimately taking a 2-1 lead in the match.
Dongallo continued to shine in the fourth set, leading UE to a late-game breakaway after Ateneo tied the set. She scored UE’s last three points, securing the victory and giving the Lady Warriors a promising start to the season.
Supporting Dongallo’s explosive performance were Riza Nogales and Kayce Balingit, who contributed 13 and 12 points, respectively. On the Ateneo side, Lyann De Guzman led the team with 19 points and 15 excellent digs.
After the game, UE assistant coach Dr. Obet Vital expressed the team’s modest goal for the season: to make the Lady Warriors relevant again and bring UE back to the map in collegiate volleyball.
With high morale, the UE team looks ahead to their next challenge against the UST Golden Tigresses on Wednesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
