Caloocan Bishop and current President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), Pablo Virgilio David, has been appointed as the Vice President of the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences (FABC). This significant appointment was made during the bishops’ central committee meeting in Bangkok, with his term set to commence in January 2025.

David will succeed Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith of Colombo in this role. Additionally, Cardinal Filipe Neri Ferrão from India has been elected as the next FABC president, as announced by Tokyo Archbishop Tarcisius Isao Kikuchi on Facebook.

Despite his new responsibilities within the FABC, David will continue to serve as the Bishop of Caloocan and retain his position as CBCP President, as confirmed by CBCP research head Father Vladimir Echalas.

The appointment of Bishop David holds considerable significance for the Philippine Church, as his representation is expected to greatly contribute to the FABC assembly, according to Echalas.

The Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences (FABC) comprises episcopal conferences from South, Southeast, East, and Central Asia, serving as a crucial platform for collaboration and coordination among Catholic leaders in the region.

Bishop David, known for his outspoken criticism of former President Rodrigo Duterte’s drug war, has also been recognized for his role in the communication body during the Vatican Synod in October 2023.
