The government aims to address water and power needs by constructing 20 medium and three to five large dams by 2028, according to National Irrigation Administration (NIA) head Eduardo Guillen. President Marcos has expressed a preference for high, multipurpose dams, citing their benefits in irrigation, flood control, power generation, domestic water, and aquaculture. Projects like the Tumauini Dam in Isabela and others in Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur are part of the plan. In the Visayas, the Jalaur Dam and projects in the Panay River Basin are underway. Guillen highlighted the potential for tourism in high dams, noting that most of the country’s dams were built decades ago. Marcos anticipates the completion of four large dams by 2028, including projects in Isabela, Iloilo, and Ilocos Norte.
