In Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s parliament recently approved the appointment of Hun Sen’s youngest son as a deputy prime minister, continuing the trend of family members assuming key government positions. This move follows Hun Sen’s transition from the premiership to handing power over to his eldest son, Hun Manet, after nearly four decades of ruling Cambodia.

The government, led by Hun Manet since last year, has seen an increase in familial appointments, with various relatives occupying top positions. The endorsement of 41-year-old Civil Service Minister Hun Many as a deputy premier was unanimously supported by all 120 lawmakers, including Hun Sen himself, at the request of his eldest brother. This appointment adds to the existing 10 deputy prime ministers in the government.

During the parliamentary session, Hun Manet emphasized that his brother’s promotion aligns with the government’s goal of achieving the highest efficiency in implementing policies, with the aim of transforming Cambodia into a high-income country by 2050. Other members of the family holding prominent positions include Hun Sen’s nephew Neth Savoeun, a former national police chief, and his second son Hun Manith, who serves as the head of the Defense Ministry’s military intelligence unit and as a deputy commander of the Royal Cambodian Army.

Since assuming power in 1985, Hun Sen has been credited with modernizing Cambodia, but his rule has also faced criticism for issues such as environmental degradation, widespread corruption, and the suppression of political opposition.

In addition to these developments, Hun Sen is expected to become the president of the Senate following an upcoming election of senators.
