President Marcos has taken action to address the pressing challenges to maritime security in the West Philippine Sea by issuing Executive Order (EO) 57. This order renames and reorganizes the National Coast Watch Council (NCWC) as the National Maritime Council (NMC), chaired by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin.

The NMC is mandated to develop policies and strategies to ensure unified and effective governance of maritime security and domain awareness. President Marcos emphasized the importance of strengthening maritime security in safeguarding the country’s territorial integrity and the peaceful existence of Filipinos.

Members of the NMC include key government officials from various departments and agencies involved in maritime affairs. EO 57 also directs several agencies to provide full support to the council.

Additionally, the EO establishes the Presidential Office for Maritime Concerns (POMC) to assist the NMC in implementing policies and coordinating efforts. The National Task Force for the West Philippine Sea is placed under the NMC’s oversight.

President Marcos’s actions come in response to recent incidents of harassment by the China Coast Guard in the West Philippine Sea. The move underscores the Philippines’ commitment to defending its sovereignty and territorial rights in the face of external threats.

Furthermore, the Federation of Free Workers has voiced support for the government’s stance, calling for accountability and stronger defensive measures against aggression.

Overall, EO 57 represents a proactive approach to enhancing maritime security and protecting the country’s interests in the West Philippine Sea.
