President Marcos Jr. reaffirmed the Philippines’ commitment to defending its sovereignty and territorial integrity in the face of disputes with China over the South China Sea. While acknowledging the historic friendship between the Filipino and Chinese peoples, Marcos emphasized that the Philippines would push back against any disregard for its sovereign rights and jurisdiction.

He reiterated the Philippines’ stance on pursuing dialogue and diplomacy but asserted that the country would never surrender its territory or maritime jurisdiction to any foreign aggressor. Marcos highlighted the importance of upholding principles such as sovereignty and sovereign rights, particularly in the West Philippine Sea.

Regarding recent developments in the South China Sea, Marcos underscored the need to uphold international law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and the 2016 Arbitration Award, which invalidated China’s expansive maritime claims. He expressed disappointment over continued provocative actions that infringe upon the Philippines’ sovereignty and rights despite the clarity provided by international law.

Despite tensions, Marcos affirmed the Philippines’ commitment to engaging China bilaterally and through ASEAN-led mechanisms to address maritime differences. He also emphasized the importance of creating a conducive environment for negotiations on a code of conduct in the South China Sea.

Additionally, Marcos emphasized the need to modernize the Philippines’ armed forces and coast guard to safeguard Filipino nationals and interests in areas under Philippine jurisdiction. He cautioned against overemphasizing geopolitical tensions and urged for a balanced approach in navigating regional dynamics.
