The British government has honored two scientists from the University of the Philippines-Diliman for their significant contributions to Philippine research and development.

Pamela Louise Tolentino from the National Institute of Geological Sciences and Giovanni Tapang, the dean of the College of Science, were among the Filipino scientists recognized by the United Kingdom for their achievements in joint scientific endeavors over the past decade.

Tolentino’s research focuses on studying river flow dynamics and their impact on landscapes, while Tapang was acknowledged for his role in developing a portable learning device that enables students to conduct various science experiments.

Their work was supported by the Newton Agham Fund, part of the UK’s official development assistance program, which funds partnerships promoting economic development and social welfare in the Philippines. Since its launch in 2016, the fund has allocated approximately P180 million for research projects in health, life sciences, environmental resilience, and energy security.

Collaborative efforts between Filipino and UK scientists have been ongoing since 2014 through various scientific partnerships.
