In response to the recent recovery of significant amounts of cocaine along the shorelines of Eastern Visayas and Northeastern Mindanao, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) is stepping up its maritime patrols to prevent the entry of illegal drugs. Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan, the PCG Commandant, has issued directives for Coast Guard Districts to enhance vessel monitoring, bolster intelligence operations, increase coastal security patrols, and collaborate closely with agencies like the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), Philippine National Police (PNP), and local government units. Additionally, Admiral Gavan has instructed Coast Guard personnel to strengthen networks with local fisherfolk to improve monitoring capabilities and promptly report any suspicious activities at sea. Multiple instances of suspected cocaine recovery have prompted intensified efforts, with authorities handing over seized items for further investigation and continuing vigilance along vulnerable coastlines.
