On Thursday morning, a magnitude 5.4 earthquake occurred in Surigao del Sur, as reported by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs). The seismic event took place around 8:23 a.m., approximately 77 kilometers southeast of the town of Cagwait, within the same province.

Phivolcs director Teresito “Toto” Bacolcol provided details, stating that the earthquake was tectonic in origin and had a depth of focus of 15 kilometers. Residents in Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur, reported feeling Intensity 5, while those in Bislig, also in the same province, experienced Intensity 4.

Despite the significant intensity felt in some areas, Bacolcol assured that both damage to infrastructure and aftershocks were unlikely following the tremor. Nonetheless, the event serves as a reminder of the region’s susceptibility to seismic activity, prompting continued vigilance and preparedness measures among residents and local authorities.
