President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s visit to Germany from March 11 to 13 is poised to bolster defense cooperation between Manila and Berlin amid growing concerns over China’s assertiveness in the West Philippine Sea, according to Consul General Maria Yvette “Ivy” Banzon-Abalos of the Philippine Consulate General in Frankfurt.

Banzon-Abalos highlighted the existing agreement between the two countries, which involves Germany assisting the Philippine Coast Guard in enhancing its capability to safeguard the country’s coastline. She expressed confidence that the President’s visit would further strengthen this cooperation.

The visit comes at a time of heightened tensions between the Philippines and China, particularly regarding territorial claims in the South China Sea. President Marcos Jr. recently expressed concern over developments in the West Philippine Sea, including the presence of the Chinese navy and interference with Philippine vessels’ electronic communication capabilities.

Banzon-Abalos emphasized that the visit presents an opportunity to discuss pressing issues affecting both countries and explore potential areas of partnership. She noted Germany’s readiness to collaborate with the Philippines in promoting international law and enhancing maritime security in the region.

During her visit to Manila in January, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock expressed her government’s willingness to work with the Philippines to address challenges in the West Philippine Sea. Baerbock criticized China’s actions in the region, highlighting concerns about its harassment of Filipino vessels and violations of international law.

Apart from defense cooperation, Banzon-Abalos also mentioned Germany’s interest in hiring Filipino workers, including nurses, engineers, and hospitality industry professionals. She noted that recent changes in German labor laws, driven by a labor shortage, have created opportunities for Filipino workers to fill these roles.

The visit underscores the longstanding diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Germany, which are set to celebrate 70 years of diplomatic ties this year. With total trade between the two countries reaching $3.91 billion in 2022, Germany remains a significant economic partner for the Philippines.
