The Philippines and Germany are looking to broaden their defense cooperation to cover cyber and maritime domains, particularly amid China’s concerning activities in the West Philippine Sea. President Marcos expressed this intention during a joint press conference with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, emphasizing the importance of advancing peace and development in the Philippines. Germany has been a key defense partner since 1974, and Marcos welcomed discussions on expanding cooperation beyond training to include cyber and maritime defense. The two countries also affirmed their commitment to international law, including UNCLOS. Additionally, they signed a “Joint Declaration of Intent on Strengthening Cooperation in the Maritime Sector,” aiming to enhance maritime trade and benefit Filipino seafarers. Both leaders stressed the significance of maintaining peace and upholding a rules-based order in the Indo-Pacific region. Looking ahead, the Philippines will host a trilateral meeting with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa to deepen defense and economic ties in response to China’s provocative actions in the South China Sea.
