Massive Travel Disruptions Occur Due to Snowstorm in the Northeastern Region of US
The northeastern United States experienced significant snowfall on Tuesday as a powerful winter storm swept through the region, covering New York City in snow for the first time in two years and leading to flight cancellations and school closures.
Airlines canceled over 1,220 flights, with 43 percent of flights at New York’s LaGuardia airport and one in five flights at JFK Airport affected, according to aviation tracker Flight Aware.
Schools in New York City were forced to close, and transportation operators worked to provide service as authorities urged the public to avoid driving in hazardous conditions.
Authorities noted that it was the first time in two years that enough snow had accumulated to require the use of plows in the country’s largest city.
The city’s emergency notification system advised residents: “Four to eight inches (10-20 centimeters) of snow and wind gusts up to 40 miles (64 kilometers) per hour expected. Avoid unnecessary travel. If you must travel, use mass transit.”
Despite the warnings, New Yorkers flocked to Central Park, where some engaged in activities like jogging and dog walking, while others built snowmen and enjoyed the snowy weather.
The National Weather Service (NWS) issued winter storm warnings for more than 32 million people as Storm Lorraine caused havoc. Rural areas in the northeast were particularly affected, with snow plows working to clear roads amidst heavy snowfall.
Hampton Township in New Jersey received 13 inches of snow, while Chester in upstate New York saw over 11 inches, according to meteorologists.
The NWS warned of strong winds, heavy snowfall, and potential damage to trees, power lines, and travel disruptions along the East Coast. The heaviest snowfall was expected in eastern Pennsylvania, northern New Jersey, southeast New York, and southern New England, including the New York metropolitan area, leading to significant travel disruptions.
