The Department of Health (DOH) in Manila, Philippines, reassured the public that the risk of anthrax infection is very low, despite recent cases reported in other countries. They emphasized that anthrax, caused by a spore-forming bacteria, does not transmit from person to person like common colds or flu. The DOH is closely monitoring international anthrax cases and collaborating with the Department of Agriculture to implement preventive measures for animals, particularly livestock. While anthrax mainly affects ruminant livestock, it can also infect humans, although the risk is higher for veterinarians, farmers, and others handling animals and their products. The DOH highlighted that anthrax vaccines are not administered to the general population. From 2017 to 2023, only 82 suspected anthrax cases were recorded, with no reported cases in 2019-2021 or the beginning of 2024. According to the World Health Organization, humans can contract anthrax from infected animals or contaminated products. The DOH advised avoiding raw or undercooked meat and limiting contact with livestock or animal remains. Following an anthrax outbreak in Laos, Thailand has implemented close monitoring of livestock.
