The Department of Transportation (DOTr) and Meralco have formalized an agreement to facilitate the construction of facilities and provide power for the Metro Manila Subway, the country’s first-ever underground subway system.

This agreement, known as the Switching Station Agreement with Deeds of Usufruct, grants Meralco access to a Switching Station Area spanning 1743 square meters, allowing for the interconnection of the Metro Manila Subway to Meralco’s distribution network. Meralco will undertake the financing, installation, construction, operation, and maintenance of the necessary facilities within the switching station.

Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista expressed gratitude to Meralco for their support, emphasizing that this agreement marks a significant step forward in realizing the Metro Manila Subway project.

Spanning 33.1 kilometers and connecting 17 stations across the National Capital Region, the Metro Manila Subway aims to significantly reduce travel time, with the journey from Quezon City to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport expected to be shortened to just 35 minutes from the current one hour and ten minutes.

The project will be executed in two phases: the initial phase will encompass the central zone in the North Capital Region, stretching from Valenzuela to Parañaque, while the second phase will cover the north and south zones.

Tunnel construction for the Metro Manila Subway project commenced in January 2023, marking a crucial milestone in the realization of this transformative transportation initiative.
