Having explored the island of Penang, nestled in the Strait of Malacca within Malaysia, I can attest to its reputation for its culinary delights and rich heritage. Thanks to a food tour organized by Travel Warehouse Inc. (TWI) in partnership with Air Asia, I finally had the opportunity to tick off this dreamy destination from my bucket list. With the pre-arranged extra baggage allowance from Air Asia, I was equipped with a generous 40-kilo, two-baggage allowance, which proved to be essential given the abundance of food and crafts awaiting me in Penang.

My culinary adventure began onboard Air Asia, where I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the in-flight meal, particularly the delicious nasi lemak. Taking the first flight at 1:10 a.m. to Kuala Lumpur, followed by a connection to Penang, I arrived in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of George Town just in time for breakfast.

Nestled in the heart of the city, my accommodation at The Wembley-A St. Giles Hotel provided a clean and centrally located base for exploring. Within walking distance was the iconic Chowrasta Market, offering a vibrant mix of wet and dry goods, including a treasure trove of English books on the second floor. The lively breakfast scene offered an array of delights, from dim sum to classic noodle dishes.

After a leisurely morning, I explored the Wonderfood Museum, where larger-than-life food replicas provided the perfect backdrop for Instagram-worthy photos. A visit to Chew Jetty offered insight into the unique water village lifestyle of George Town.

For lunch and dinner, I indulged in Peranakan cuisine, a fusion of Chinese, Malay, Indian, and other influences. Lunch at Auntie Gaik Lean’s Old School Eatery showcased authentic family recipes, earning the restaurant a coveted Michelin star. Dinner at Jawi House provided a tantalizing taste of Indian Peranakan cuisine, highlighting the diverse flavors of the region.

In between culinary adventures, I visited The Top for breathtaking views of Penang and stocked up on local spices and delicacies at a nearby supermarket.

As I reflected on my first day in George Town, I realized that my culinary journey had only just begun, promising many more delicious discoveries in this food lover’s paradise.
