In a proactive move to protect children from the dangers of online abuse and exploitation, a group of social media influencers has stepped forward as Creators #ForEveryChild. Recognizing their dedication to using their platforms to uphold children’s rights, Unicef Philippines has bestowed upon these digital advocates the inaugural annual recognition badge.
The Creators #ForEveryChild, comprising esteemed individuals such as AJ Bacar, Anina Rubio, and Ginger Arboleda, were honored during the Safer Internet Convention on Digital Responsibility. Their impactful efforts have played a pivotal role in combatting online sexual abuse and exploitation, shedding light on the disturbing prevalence of abusive materials targeting vulnerable children.
Given that a significant portion of Filipino youth looks to social media influencers for guidance and inspiration, the influence of these digital advocates in raising awareness and promoting responsible online conduct cannot be overstated. This year’s convention underscored the urgency of implementing laws like Republic Act 11930, designed to bolster protections against online predators and enhance reporting mechanisms for victims.
According to a Unicef-Ecpat-Interpol Disrupting Harm study, an alarming 20 percent of children aged 12 to 17 reported being victims of online abuse in 2021. However, disclosure rates remain disproportionately low due to stigma and limited awareness about reporting channels. In a collaborative effort, nearly 100 children and youths participated in developing a Digital Responsibility Program during the convention. Supported by Unicef and organized by the Positive Youth Development Network, the Department of Education, and local government units, this initiative aims to equip learners and educators with the necessary skills to navigate online platforms safely.
Unicef Philippines underscores the importance of nurturing digital literacy among both adults and children to create a safer online environment. By promoting responsible digital citizenship and fostering collective action, the program seeks to harness the positive potential of the internet while mitigating the risks of online abuse and exploitation.
