Despite the debunking of some historical claims, Filipinos have indeed made significant contributions to various fields, as highlighted by recent discoveries. Here are five notable inventions and designs by Filipinos that have positively impacted both local and global communities:

1. “Salpakan” Educational War Game : In 1970, Sofronio “Ronnie” H. Pasola Jr. created the educational war game “Salpakan,” which later evolved into the popular “Game of the Generals” produced by MindMasters Inc. This strategic board game not only entertained but also enhanced critical thinking and military-like skills, leaving a lasting impact on gaming culture.

2. Safe Abaca Fiber-Extracting Machine : To address the hazards faced by abaca farmers during fiber extraction, the Department of Science and Technology – Forest Products Research and Development Institute (DOST-FPRDI) developed a safe and efficient fiber-extracting machine in March 2022. This innovation not only improves fiber quality and yield but also ensures the safety of farmers, contributing to the sustainability of abaca production.

3. Permacane Technology for Rattan : Eduardo Yrezabal invented Permacane technology, which maximizes the use of rattan by ensuring that 97% of the material is utilized in furniture and architectural elements. This innovation addresses the dwindling supply of rattan in the Philippines and promotes sustainable manufacturing practices.

4. Pinyapel Treeless Paper : Developed by the Design Center of the Philippines, Pinyapel is a 100% natural paper made from discarded pineapple leaves. This specialty paper serves as an eco-friendly alternative to traditional paper, contributing to the reduction of plastic waste and deforestation. While the mass production of Pinyapel presents challenges, its potential in the global market highlights the Philippines’ role as a major pineapple producer.

5. Philippine Export of Buttons and Christmas Decorations : While the Philippines used to lead in the export of buttons and Christmas decorations, competition from China led to a decline in production. However, Filipino innovators continue to contribute to the industry through advancements such as the development of new manufacturing technologies and materials.

These inventions and designs demonstrate the creativity, resourcefulness, and resilience of Filipinos in addressing societal challenges and contributing to global innovation.
