Tikoy Aguiluz VI, a distinguished figure in Philippine cinema, left an indelible mark with his exceptional talent as a director, producer, screenwriter, and cinematographer. In 1985, he made his directorial debut with “Boatman,” a critically acclaimed film starring Ronnie Lazaro and Sarsi Emmanuel. The movie garnered international recognition at the London Film Festival and earned Tikoy a Gawad Urian nomination for Best Director in the local scene.

Subsequent projects like “Father Balweg: Rebel Priest” (1986) and “Bagong Bayani” (1995) showcased Tikoy’s versatility and storytelling prowess. However, it was his film “Segurista” (1996) that truly solidified his reputation in the industry. Selected as the Philippines’ official entry to the Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film, “Segurista” received widespread acclaim and swept major awards at the Gawad Urian.

Tikoy’s diverse filmography also included “Rizal sa Dapitan” (1997), which won the Grand Jury Prize at the Brussels International Film Festival, and “Tatarin” (2001), based on Nick Joaquin’s short story “The Summer Solstice.”

Beyond his contributions to cinema, Tikoy was recognized for his involvement in the arts and education. He co-founded the UP Film Center (now UP Film Institute) and was a respected visual artist with solo exhibitions and accolades to his name.

In recognition of his invaluable contributions to Philippine cinema, Tikoy was bestowed the Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government.

His passing deeply saddened the film community, with tributes pouring in from colleagues and organizations alike. The Directors’ Guild of the Philippines and the Film Development Council of the Philippines paid homage to his visionary leadership and significant impact on the industry.

As the film world mourns the loss of Tikoy Aguiluz VI, his legacy as a pioneering filmmaker and dedicated advocate for Philippine cinema will continue to inspire generations to come.
