Last week, Gordon Cormier and Dallas Liu, the young actors portraying key roles in Netflix’s “Avatar: The Last Airbender” series, took the lead in launching the live-action adaptation in Manila. Their arrival was met with a warm reception, and they engaged in a busy schedule of events alongside regional press, local influencers, and other delegates from the Asia Pacific region.

For Cormier, who embodies the main character, Aang, in the series, the welcome was especially poignant given his Filipino-Canadian heritage. Returning to the Philippines after a prolonged period due to the Covid-19 outbreak, he expressed his joy, stating, “This is amazing. I’m in my homeland! Filipino right here. I haven’t been [back] here in a while, so it’s really nice. I got to see my family. It’s incredible.”

Reflecting on his journey, Cormier shared memories of his audition at the age of 11, recounting the emotional moment he learned he secured the iconic role of Aang. Liu, who portrays Prince Zuko, revealed his own experience, humorously recalling how he was pranked by his agents and manager before learning he had landed the role.

Discussing their approaches to portraying their characters, Liu delved into Zuko’s complex psychology, drawing from personal experiences to capture the character’s trauma. Meanwhile, Cormier highlighted the ease with which he connected with Aang’s cheerful demeanor, though he acknowledged the challenges of tapping into the character’s emotional depth during darker moments.

Both actors expressed excitement for audiences to witness their characters’ growth throughout the series, promising captivating fight sequences and emotional development. Despite their characters’ conflicts on-screen, Cormier and Liu affirmed their strong bond off-screen, with Liu offering heartfelt words of support for his co-star’s journey.

“Avatar: The Last Airbender” is now available for streaming on Netflix worldwide, featuring an ensemble cast including Ian Ousley, Kiawentiio, Ken Leung, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, and Daniel Dae Kim.
