Ford announced new multibillion-dollar capital projects in Midwestern manufacturing near its Detroit headquarters on Thursday (Friday in Manila), as the automaker distributes new investments across the United States.

The 119-year-old automaker plans to invest $3.7 billion in Michigan, Ohio, and Missouri to expand manufacturing capacity for a mix of electric vehicles (EVs) and traditional gasoline-powered vehicles, much of it at existing sites that have been in the company’s portfolio for years.

The decision comes after SK Innovation, a South Korean battery giant, said in September that it will invest $11.4 billion in Tennessee and Kentucky to establish greenfield vehicle production and battery operations.

Major automakers are pouring billions of dollars into developing electric vehicles, developing driver-assistance programs, and equipping their vehicles with the latest and greatest digital technology.

“To produce a new generation of amazing Ford automobiles, we’re investing in American employment and our employees,” said Ford CEO Jim Farley.

More than 6,200 additional manufacturing jobs will be added, with about 3,000 temporary UAW employees being converted to permanent status.

UAW President Ray Curry remarked, “This announcement is a testament to UAW members who contribute their talent, experience, and expertise to the success of Ford Motor Company.”

“We’re always trying to persuade companies and legislators that union jobs are worth the investment, and Ford will increase to the plate by creating these jobs and converting 3,000 UAW members to permanent, full-time status with benefits,” says the union.

Suzuki will invest $1.3 billion in India’s electric vehicle manufacturing.

A total of $2 billion will be invested in Michigan projects, Ford will increase production of the new F-150 Lightning electric truck and developing new pickup and coupe automobiles.

Ford will increase to invest $1.5 billion in Ohio for expanded EV assembly and other initiatives, as well as $95 million in Missouri to add a shift to a plant that builds commercial vans and will add an electric van.
