Medilines grows as medical equipment provider, has expanded its presence in Davao by supplying cancer diagnostic equipment to the Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC).

The new facility is outfitted with three advanced cancer diagnostic machines, making it Mindanao’s first complete cancer diagnosis package. SPECT/CT (Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography/Computed Tomography), PET/CT (Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography), and the Medical Cyclotron are among the medical devices.

SPMC, located in Davao City, is the Department of Health’s largest tertiary hospital and the leading provider of health care and training in Mindanao.

The diagnostic facility is worth approximately P529 million, with funding provided by the Office of the President through the Department of Health’s (DOH) Health Facility Enhancement Program, Medilines said in a statement yesterday.

“These cutting-edge modalities essentially provide the facility with the most useful diagnostic and/or treatment information for a wide range of diseases.” Nuclear medicine has the potential to detect disease at an early stage, often before symptoms or abnormalities can be detected by other diagnostic tests. It allows doctors to “find, characterize, and track the progression of the disease over time,” Medilines explained.

A SPECT/CT procedure, similar to a whole-body bone scan, provides more precise information than invasive procedures such as exploratory surgery.

Once a lesion is identified, a PET/CT procedure may provide additional information on whether the lesion is benign or malignant, eliminating the need for a surgical biopsy, according to the company.

Furthermore, both systems provide critical information for radiotherapy planning.

With both the SPECT/CT and PET/CT, SPMC is able to provide high-quality patient care that is focused on precision medicine and personalized care.

Cancer is the third leading cause of morbidity and mortality for noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) in the Philippines, according to the Philippine Cancer Control Program. Breast cancer is still the most common cancer in both men and women, followed by lung, colorectum, liver, and prostate cancer.
