Angkan Coffee a new Filipino brand to be introduced by Let’s go Pinoy
February 16, 2022
Angkan Coffee is a new ‘proudly Filipino’ concept that will be brewing soon at Bonifacio Global City.
In Manila, Philippines, the Arabica PH has been through a lot in recent weeks, with many customers understandably concerned after the Japanese coffee chain’s abrupt outlet closures on January 31 (along with a social media blackout). Thankfully, on February 2, Arabica PH clarified the situation, stating that their contract with their Philippine partners had already expired and that they will be expanding across the country with new management soon.
But what does the future hold for the former partners of Arabica PH, who helped the Japanese brand expand organically in Metro Manila? Allue and Dr. San San Hortaleza, partners and mother-daughter combination, may have left the popular café, but their narrative (and love for coffee) is far from over.
Allue said on February 1 that it was finally time for them to “create a proudly Filipino brand,” which has been a dream of theirs since launching Arabica to the Philippines in 2017.
Angkan Coffee was formally introduced to the globe on Thursday, February 10: a 100 percent Filipino coffee brand that would be “brewing soon” for patrons and newbies looking for a bold, brewtiful, and “proudly Filipino” new coffee brand to support.
From bean to brew, I’m proud to call myself a Pinoy.
After four years of working for a successful Japanese coffee chain, Allue decided it was time to explore the same concept on her own, using Filipino beans.
Allue’s new brew-mance blossomed as a result of her hands-on experience with Arabica PH. Allue wanted to do the same for Angkan since Arabica is a native Japanese coffee store that presents diverse beans from around the world while maintaining a “quite distinct Japanese vibe, given its locally-inspired aesthetic” (minimalist and peaceful).
“With Angkan, we wanted to do something similar, not only by fusing modern Filipino aesthetics with traditional Filipino hospitality,” Allue told Rappler. “But we also wanted to take a step further by displaying locally-sourced coffee beans as well as the individuals engaged in their farm-to-cup journey.”
Angkan Coffee will continue to provide a diverse selection of beans and beverages from around the world, but as part of the company’s “proudly Filipino” concept, these chosen espresso and non-espresso beverages and pastries will feature Filipino touches to keep things both unique and familiar.
