Spectrum, a wholly owned subsidiary of Manila Electric Co. (Meralco), has completed solar power projects that will power Ajinomoto Philippines Corp. and Ajinomoto Bulacan factory as well as 14 public schools in Cavite.

After three months of development, APC and Spectrum turned on the pilot one-megawatt peak (MWp) solar installation in the latter’s production factory in Guiguinto, Bulacan on June 1.

The project is expected to create roughly 1.33 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of energy each year, allowing APC to reduce its carbon footprint by 950 tons over the next 20 years – the equivalent of planting two million trees or reducing vehicle traffic by 3.8 million kilometers per year.

Ernesto Carlos, associate director and chief sustainability officer at APC Group, said the project is the first of several environmental projects on the company’s sustainability strategy.

“By 2030, the Ajinomoto Group of Companies hopes to achieve two goals. “First, we want to assist one billion people throughout the world live longer, and second, we want to minimize our environmental effect by half,” APC president Tsutomu Nara stated.

“Through this win-win relationship with Spectrum and Meralco, we are able to achieve a major milestone in making our business sustainable by lowering our carbon impact in the country,” he said.

In collaboration with its local government unit, Spectrum also successfully powered a combined 510-kilowatt-peak (kWp) solar installation for 14 public schools in Dasmarinas City, Cavite, on May 30. (LGU).

The LGU teamed with Spectrum to establish the solar facility in December last year, through the Department of Education-Dasmarinas, in order to save up to 50% on the schools’ electricity bills.

Every year, the solar plant is expected to generate 650,000 kWh of energy.

In line with the LGU’s commitment to sustainability, the project would reduce the schools’ carbon footprint by 460 tons, equivalent to 950,000 trees planted over 20 years and 1.8 million kilometers of vehicle traffic avoided every year.

“The goal of this program is to serve as an inspiration and encouragement to our children to take part in caring for our environment, not merely to save money and benefit the environment,” Dasmarinas City Mayor Jennifer Barzaga stated.

Spectrum has been aggressively engaging business and public sector partners in order to assist them in achieving their sustainability goals through renewable energy.

It has installed solar panels with a total capacity of more than 40 MW since 2016.

While industrial and commercial customers like Ajinomoto Bulacan factory make up the majority of Spectrum’s existing portfolio, the company’s goal is to make solar energy accessible to everyone.

“We are glad to announce the completion and full energization of back-to-back solar facilities for Ajinomoto Bulacan factory and Dasmarinas LGUs, and we thank our partners for entrusting the development of their solar installation to us.” Spectrum president and CEO Ferdinand Geluz remarked, “Our common attitude and aims, which are focused on sustainability, has led us to contribute to the environment by reducing our carbon footprint emissions while simultaneously enabling operational improvements and greater savings through solar.”

Through an in-depth study of energy consumption trends and strategic alliances with world-class technology partners, Spectrum provides tailored solutions for industrial, commercial, and residential customers.
