Ruth B, the Canadian-Ethiopian singer/songwriter/pianist renowned for her chart-topping hits “Dandelions” and “Lost Boy,” has unveiled her latest release, “28,” a collaborative effort with viral sensation Dean Lewis.

In an exclusive interview with Music Geek, Ruth B opened up about the deeply personal nature of “28,” which reflects her journey of self-discovery and letting go. She shared, “It’s about letting go of something and finding yourself in the process. I think oftentimes, it’s a scary thing to do, so I wanted to write about where I was at in my life. I’m 28 when I wrote the song. It’s about putting yourself first and figuring out what makes you, you.”

The song holds significant meaning for Ruth B as it was inspired by the end of a significant relationship. She explained, “It’s one that I needed at that time. I was going through the end of a certain relationship. At that time, I was trying to find the good in something that felt very hard because letting go of anything can be tough. Writing that song was a turning point for me where I went from being devastated about this thing to seeing the good in all of it.”

Collaborating with Dean Lewis on “28” was a joyous experience for Ruth B, who admired his music before they even met. She expressed, “Getting into the studio with him was super fun. He’s very energetic and bouncy. It was cool to be around him.”

Raised in Canada by Ethiopian immigrant parents, Ruth B’s upbringing influenced her musical style, blending elements of Ethiopian music with influences like Stevie Wonder and Lauryn Hill. She shared, “Subconsciously, it has affected my way of writing a little bit, like the melodies that I use. When I do go back and listen to Ethiopian music, I can make a connection with some of the melodies I use and some of the piano riffs I play.”

Reflecting on her musical journey, Ruth B expressed gratitude for the success of “Dandelions,” which recently surpassed one billion streams. She remarked, “Having a billion streams is mind-boggling. It’s amazing and heartwarming. Makes me want to write more music and connect with my listeners even more.”

Describing her music as honest and raw, Ruth B explained her songwriting process, which typically begins with her emotions. She shared, “I write about what I’m going through at that point. It usually starts with a feeling. The emotion, the sadness, the happiness, the excitement, the fear. And then, I take it to the keyboard.”
