The see-through clothing trend has taken over Paris Fashion Week, demonstrating that the demand for revealing attire remains strong despite practical and legal challenges. Celebrities like Dua Lipa and Rihanna have embraced the nude look, showcasing it on red carpets and influencing fashion trends.
Designers at Paris Fashion Week, including Chloe, Courreges, Givenchy, and Weinsanto, have all embraced the trend, presenting various versions of sheer outfits made from tulle, organza, fishnet, or chiffon. According to fashion data specialists TagWalk, the number of sheer outfits increased by 40 percent across major brands from 2023 to 2024.
Saint Laurent’s creative director, Anthony Vaccarello, notably made sheer fabrics the focal point of the brand’s latest autumn/winter collection, coinciding with an exhibition titled “Sheer: The Diaphanous Creations of Yves Saint Laurent” at the designer’s museum in Paris. This choice pays homage to Yves Saint Laurent’s iconic transparent designs dating back to the 1960s.
While some critics, particularly in the United States, express discomfort with the trend, associating it with objectification and misogyny, others view it as an expression of body positivity and freedom. Saint Laurent’s biographer Laurence Benaim defends the designer’s use of transparency, stating that it was about suggesting the body’s presence rather than simply baring it.
However, wearing sheer clothing in public comes with legal considerations, even in countries like France. The crime of “sexual exhibition” carries potential penalties, prompting individuals to consider practical ways to incorporate the trend into their wardrobe without risking legal repercussions.
Fashion experts suggest layering sheer garments with opaque pieces, such as wearing a short lining or skirt underneath a sheer skirt or pairing a blazer with a flesh-colored bodysuit for a more subtle interpretation of the trend. Ultimately, it’s about finding a balance between embracing the trend and respecting social norms and legal boundaries.
