George Royeca, the Chief Executive Officer of ANGKAS, commended the government’s Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP), describing it as a pivotal driver for social change.

Speaking at The Manila Times Economic Forum at the Sheraton Manila Hotel, Royeca emphasized the need to reimagine the PUVMP as more than just a vehicle replacement initiative. He underscored the importance of addressing broader societal challenges, including the welfare of drivers and the struggles faced by commuters.

Royeca emphasized that modernization would pave the way for a more inclusive, equitable, and prosperous future. He highlighted the direct impact of a modern transportation system on improving the lives of Filipinos by reducing waiting times, providing reliable schedules, and ensuring safer travels.

Asserting the necessity of expanding modernization efforts beyond Metro Manila, Royeca stressed the importance of creating economic opportunities in other regions to alleviate congestion in the capital and stimulate national economic growth.

Royeca emphasized that modernizing the transport system goes beyond vehicle upgrades; it is about laying the groundwork for national development, uplifting livelihoods, and fostering a sense of community and purpose across the country. He highlighted the transformative potential of an effective modernization program in lifting drivers out of poverty and offering them hope for a brighter future.

The PUVMP, spearheaded by the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board, Department of Transportation, and Office of Transport Cooperatives, aims to replace traditional jeepneys with modern units featuring lower carbon emissions as a key component of the initiative.
