“Oppenheimer,” Christopher Nolan’s monumental film chronicling the genesis of the atomic bomb, dominated the BAFTA film awards in London, cementing its position as a serious contender ahead of the Oscars.

The movie swept the board with an impressive seven wins, including Best Film and Best Director for Nolan himself. Cillian Murphy’s portrayal of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the renowned physicist credited as the “father of the atomic bomb,” earned him the award for Best Actor, while Robert Downey Jr. secured Best Supporting Actor for his role as Lewis Strauss, a member of the US Atomic Energy Commission.

Murphy, in his first BAFTA win, expressed gratitude to Nolan for believing in him, while also expressing his astonishment and joy at the film’s success. For Nolan, despite previous commercial successes, it was his first BAFTA win for Best Director, marking a significant milestone in his illustrious career.

Downey Jr., in a light-hearted acceptance speech, humorously recounted Nolan’s advice to him to adopt an understated approach to his role, quipping about restoring his “dwindling credibility.”

“Poor Things,” a surreal dark comedy, also made a mark at the awards, securing five wins, including Best Actress for Emma Stone’s captivating performance as a Victorian reanimated corpse. Stone’s portrayal in this female “Frankenstein” tale earned her accolades, adding to her previous Golden Globe and Critics Choice awards.

The ceremony, hosted by Scottish actor David Tennant, saw notable Hollywood figures grace the red carpet, including Margot Robbie, Carey Mulligan, and Bradley Cooper. Prince William, representing the British royal family in his capacity as BAFTA president, attended the event, marking an important engagement amid personal and familial challenges.

Da’Vine Joy Randolph’s win for Best Supporting Actress in “The Holdovers” added a touch of humor to the evening, as she playfully complimented UK actor Chiwetel Ejiofor on his looks while accepting her award.

Overall, the BAFTA awards showcased a diverse array of talent and celebrated outstanding achievements in the film industry, setting the stage for an exciting lead-up to the Oscars.
