Rivermaya’s music remains as relevant and powerful as ever
Rivermaya’s highly anticipated reunion concert at the SMDC Festival Grounds in Parañaque drew thousands of excited fans, marking a triumphant return for the iconic Original Pilipino Music (OPM) band. Rico Blanco, Nathan Azarcon, Mark Escueta, and Bamboo Mañalac were all in high spirits for the event, presented by Live Nation Philippines.
The concert kicked off with a string of hits including “Monopoly,” “Kung Ayaw Mo, Huwag Mo,” “The Princess of Disguise,” “Hinahanap-hanap Kita,” “Ballroom Dancing,” “Sunny Days,” and “Ulan.” Rico Blanco then took the spotlight with a solo rendition of “You’ll Be Safe Here,” a poignant moment recalling the band’s history when Bamboo departed in 1998.
Despite the initial setback of audio issues during “20 Million,” the band persevered, treating the audience to more beloved tunes like “Luha” and “Bring Me Down.” Following a brief technical problem break, Rivermaya resumed their electrifying performance with “If,” “Fever,” “Kundiman,” “Hilo,” “Flowers,” “Panahon Na Naman,” and “Elesi.”
Bamboo surprised fans with a rendition of “Nerbyoso,” a hit song from his solo career after leaving Rivermaya. Adding to the spectacle, Higantes from Angono, Rizal, made a surprise appearance onstage during the performance of “Awit ng Kabataan.”
As the night progressed, the atmosphere reached a crescendo as the band delivered an impassioned rendition of “214,” lighting up the skies with a wave of nostalgia. However, fans were disappointed by the absence of original guitarist Perf de Castro, known for his memorable guitar solos on “Awit ng Kabataan” and “214.”
Despite the minor glitches, Rivermaya’s reunion concert was a resounding success, reaffirming their status as one of the most beloved bands in Philippine music history and leaving fans eagerly anticipating more from the iconic group.
