Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez has instructed the House Committee on Health to undertake a comprehensive review of the charter of the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) with the aim of enhancing patients’ benefits.

A statement from the Speaker’s office outlined that the objective of this review is to enhance benefits to cover at least half of the costs incurred in private wards, as well as to provide free examinations for the early detection of life-threatening diseases such as cancer. These examinations would encompass essential screenings like X-rays for lung cancer, mammography, and the human papillomavirus vaccine for cervical cancer prevention.

Romualdez emphasized that the efficacy of the Universal Health Care system hinges on ensuring citizens receive adequate medical attention and preventive care. He underscored the importance of removing any obstacles to accessing quality healthcare through this review process.

Moreover, Romualdez indicated that the review would also assess PhilHealth’s investment strategies.

The House Committee on Health has scheduled a meeting for Wednesday, during which a briefing by PhilHealth on benefits coverage will be a key agenda item, as per the House website.
